Ireland has provided a disaster response package to Malawi valued at about K5 billion (one million euro).

In a statement released by the Irish Embassy in the country on Tuesday, Ireland says it has mobilised an airlift of 58 metric tonnes of non-food items worth around K2.5 billion whose consignment was expected in Malawi on Tuesday.

The items include tents, blankets, mosquito nets, water tanks and other urgently required items.

In addition to the provision of the urgently needed non-food items, IrishAid’s programme in Malawi has reallocated a further 250 000 euro funding from within its existing support to partners who enabled them to provide urgent food and other requirements to the affected communities.

Speaking in an interview ahead of the arrival of the consignment, Irish Ambassador Aine Hearns said:  “These items are being delivered to those most in need in rural areas affected by the recent flooding and identified by the government and our NGO partners.”

Hearns added that the aid will be delivered by Irish and partner NGOs; Goal, Concern Worldwide, Trocaire, Self Help, Concern Universal and the Evangelical Association of Malawi, who, she says, have a strong presence and are actively responding in the worst affected areas.
