The Islamite Zamzam Foundation Malawi (IZF) is implementing a project that promotes use of organic manure among smallholder farmers in Zomba.

Organic manure trainer Mariam Khatib said recently when he visited some of the beneficiaries in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Malemia that food security can be only achieved if farmers employed the use of organic manure in their fields.

“We introduced this farming system to assist smallholder farmers who could not afford chemical fertilisers to produce enough at a cheaper cost. We thank Allah that we are achieving it now,” said Khatib.

He urged every Malawian to take the responsibility of fighting hunger in a way that will not deplete natural resources.

Peter Thabwa, a beneficiary of the project in Kasongo Village testified to organic manure improving his food security and advised other farmers to adopt it.

“Previously, I used to plant crops once in a year since I had no money to purchase chemical fertilisers to apply in my gardens. But since I got educated on how to make and use organic manure, I am now able to plant several crops at different intervals in a year,” explained Thabwa.

He also disclosed that the introduction of organic manure has graduated him from subsistence to commercial farming with high yields.
