Jazz lovers in the Capital City will be treated to a rare night courtesy of feast that the United States government has organised in commemoration of the International Jazz Day celebrated annually on April 30.

The International Jazz Day was created in 1991 by Michael Denny, a musician and bandleader, who at that time, was on the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Jazz Society.

In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.

In Malawi, the US Public Affairs Section has organised a jazz night as well as other activities today.

“The section will host a wide range of youths to a performance and discussion on the origins and the evolution of jazz music around the world in the week.

“On Friday, the public affairs section will host various people to an evening of classic jazz performance by Malawi’s well known jazz group the Malingaka and the Cross Cultural Band at Crossroads Hotel Auditorium,” reads information from the section.

The Cross Cultural Band comprises Americans and Malawians and represents a unique opportunity to show audiences how African and American cultures overlap and share similar values, it adds.

The International Jazz Day also brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact; raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding among others.
