JB elected deputy Sadc chairperson

Malawi President Joyce Banda has been elected deputy chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc).

Banda was elected by delegates to the 14-member regional bloc to deputise Mozambican President Amando Gebuza at the end of the 32nd summit in Maputo.

According to the summit communiqué, Banda invited the Heads of State and Government to the next summit to be held in Malawi in 2013.

The summit was the first Sadc meeting to be attended by Banda who ascended to the presidency on April 5 this year following the death of late Bingu wa Mutharika.

In her maiden speech, Banda thanked her fellow Heads of State for the support that they have given to Malawi.

The communiqué reports that the summit commended Malawi for the ascendancy to the presidency, of the first woman in the Sadc region.

During the summit, Banda also met with Tanzania president Jakaya Kikwete over a Lake Malawi border dispute between Malawi and Tanzania.
