Malawi President Joyce Banda led women into national prayers at State House in Lilongwe over achievements so far made in light of recent economic and governance challenges in the country.

In an interview, State House press officer Brian Banda said women from all religions attended the prayers which were held under the theme ‘Thank God that He has taken Us this Far.’

“These were interdenominational prayers attended by all churches, including Muslims. The President just wanted to interact with fellow women and thank God for taking us this far.

“You know there were many [economic and political governance] problems that the country has gone through. The women also wanted to celebrate the achievements that women have so far made like getting positions in the party and government,” said Banda.

He said the prayers took about four hours from 8am to around 12 noon.

Those who attended the prayers included female Cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament and senior People’s Party (PP) officials who recently got elected into the party’s national governing council at the convention.
