JB pens govt over ‘forgotten’ household items

Former president Joyce Banda, through her former director of household, has written to chief secretary to government Willie Samute, requesting to collect her household items from presidential residences.

In a letter dated August 12 2014, Banda is asking for one container with assorted medical equipment which was left at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre and assorted personal items such as linen and various family collections from Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

“I have the honour to inform you that the personal effects of the former president, Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda, were not collected from the State residences during vacation of the former president of the Republic of Malawi.

“The items were not collected due to delay in the provision of transport to ferry the items and also bureaucracy in security clearances. I will, therefore, be grateful if the State residences can avail the personal effects to the residence of the former president or allow access staff of the former president to identify the said items,” reads the letter signed by Cecelia Kumpukwe who was Banda’s director of household.

In an interview yesterday, Samute said a unit specifically meant to deal with such issues will look into the matter and address the issues being requested accordingly.

“The former president must not get worried. We will verify her request and she will be allowed to get that which rightfully belongs to her,” said Samute.

Banda came third in the May 20 Tripartite Elections. After the elections, she left the country for a two-month vacation in United States of America from where she returned home Saturday. n
