Malawi Copa Coca-Cola champions Joyce Banda Foundation (JBF) left on Monday for South Africa where they will take part in the World Cup Trophy Tour, courtesy of Carlsberg Malawi Limited.

The World Cup trophy, which arrived in South Africa on Sunday on a three-day tour, is reigniting the overwhelming 2010 World Cup fever.

The 16-member JBF delegation is being accommodated at Melrose Park in Johannesburg.

According to Carlsberg Malawi senior brands manager (non alcoholic) Titha Mblizi, the team is expected back home tomorrow.

“The purpose of the trip is for the team to experience the spirit of the World Cup. We (Coca-Cola) are building excitement ahead of the World Cup next year. We want our champions to share the experience and get motivation to excel in sports so that they can play at the world’s biggest sporting event in future,” said Mbilizi.

She said the team was yesterday expected to have a feel of the World Cup trophy at Southgate Mall where, among other things, the players and officials would have their names and the trophy printed on a 300ml Coca-Cola can.

“This will act like a World Cup souvenir and the expertise will stay with them for the rest of their lives. They will also have the opportunity of interacting with reputed football stars. The trip is

fully funded by Carlsberg, including allowances, food and accommodation,” said Mbilizi.

JBF coach Robert Munthali expressed gratitude to Carlsberg Malawi for the experience.

“This time is just about the boys enjoying themselves, and not having the pressure of playing football. We are appreciative to Carlsberg for offering us this unforgettable experience. The experience will motivate the boys to excel in their football career and education,” said Munthali.

JBF captain Timothy Gova was equally ecstatic and looking ahead with great expectation.

“Just to be in South Africa and be part of the World Cup build-up hype is something I will treasure for the rest of my life and I think my fellow players feel the same,” said Gova.

Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) president Kossam Mphande, who is part of the trip, thanked Carlsberg Malawi Limited for giving the youth the World Cup exposure.
