The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (Jica) says improper sterilisation puts a patients’ life at risk of catching infection.

Jica’s trainer and expert of the Physical Asset Management project Salvador Aquino said this in Mzuzu on Monday during the launch of a five-day autoclave sterilisation training course at Mzuzu Central Hospital.

He said improper sterilisation is common in many African countries.

“Improper sterilisation of hospital equipment poses a danger to patients who may get infected through the equipment. We are aiming at raising standards of sterilisation process,” Aquino said.

One of the training participants, Anne Manda, said the training will enable them to acquire skills to perform their jobs better.

The training is a nationwide initiative and has started in the Northern Region.
