Jnr golfers shine in F&M Golf

The junior golf development programme continues to gather momentum and over 20 golfers braved the sweltering conditions to compete in the F & M Motors Tournament at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) on Saturday.

Mario Phiri’s sheer quality once again shone brightly when he came tops in the 18-hole category played on individual medal format. The 17 handicapped blossoming golfer had 92 strokes to register 75 points.

“I just told my mum this morning that I felt like I would win and surely it has happened,” said Phiri.

His runner-up was Ganizani Lusho, who plays off eight handicap. He had 87 strokes whereas Carlo Van der Walt was third with 116 strokes, playing off 36 handicap to register a score of 80 points.

In the nine-hole category, Darren Kuyeri was the winner with 66 strokes followed by Adrian Mwale who had 68 while Elijah Olwoc was third with 71 strokes. In the girls’ category, evergreen Kate Chapola emerged the champion with 72 strokes followed by Quasira Lambat with 80 strokes while Lauren Stanely was third with 95 strokes.

Kaya Sikwese was the winner in five-hole category with 41 strokes, Sebastian Munday came second with 50 strokes while Jeremy Msosa was third with 62 strokes.

In the three-hole category, Carlos Phiri—younger brother to Mario—came tops with 21 strokes followed by three-year-old Daniel Vosloo who was the youngest participant with 26 strokes while Ilan Patel came third with 30 strokes..

F & M Motors general manager Mussa Lambat Jnr said they were very proud to be associated with junior golf.

“It all starts from the grass roots level and we are very pleased with how the project is progressing.

“We would also like to thank the junior golf committee, BSC, parents and also the young golfers for this wonderful tournament. You have all displayed a lot of commitment,” said Lambat.

A member of the junior golf committee, Dingaan Chirwa, thanked F & M Motors for sponsoring the event as well as the parents and the golfers for their commitment towards the cause.
