The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has said journalists are key to consumer protection and disseminating information on unfair trading practices.

Speaking during a workshop for business journalists yesterday at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre, CFTC executive director Charlotte Malonda said the meeting was important because the knowledge gained would be passed to consumers to make informed decisions.

“Journalists are a lifeline to our activities because they raise some of the violations that take place on the market.  The CFTC appreciates the role that journalists play and this workshop is one of the activities in educating consumers on unfair trade practices.

“Fair competition is a critical and cross-cutting issue similar to corruption and HIV and Aids,” said Malonda.

In his opening remarks, Association of Business Journalists (ABJ) deputy national coordinator, Aubrey Mchulu, noted that CFTC is relatively new in Malawi.

“It is my hope that the knowledge that we will get from this meeting will help journalists to be critical and have a better understanding of the Competition and Fair Trading Laws to do informed stories that will be helpful,” said Mchulu.

The CFTC is an autonomous agency mandated to regulate, monitor, control and prevent acts and behaviours which are likely to negatively affect competition and fair trading.
