K2.1 billion for BT roads, lights

Blantyre City Council (BCC) has received K2.1 billion from government for roads construction and maintenance of street lights.

BCC public relations manager Anthony Kasunda confirmed the development on Friday in an interview with the Malawi News Agency (Mana).

“Six roads were constructed in Blantyre City last year and this year, government wants to construct more. At the moment, we are constructing the main Ndirande Road. After that, we will also start constructing other roads. We are also rehabilitating street lights along Masauko Chipemphere High Way,” he said.

BCC mayor Noel Chalamanda thanked government for the support it is providing to the city.

So far, roads completed include Angelo Goveya- Manje, Living Waters – Chimwankhunda and Chilomoni Ring Road.

Blantyre is Malawi’s commercial hub and the second largest city, with an estimated population of over one million, according to the 2015 census report.n
