K268m girls’ hostel excites students

Girls from Traditional Authority Kadewere in Chiradzulu District will no longer walk long distances to Masalani Community Day Secondary School following plans to construct a K268 million girls’ hostel at the institution.

In an interview on Saturday, a Form Four student Ivy Sarara said many girls were missing evening classes and study time because their parents could not allow them to travel long distances.

“Many girls also lost interest in school because of the long distances and the unfair punishments for reporting late. This hostel will change the situation,” she said.

Chigwenembe breaks the ground to launch construction works

Speaking during the launch of the project on Saturday, Chiradzulu District Council chairperson Charles Chigwenembe said the hostel will provide a safe and conducive environment for girls to complete their education.

He said girls from the area face challenges in accessing education, which increases their risk of dropping out due to unplanned pregnancies and lack of interest.

“The nearest school with a hostel is far from here. So, this hostel will help girls from the surrounding villages to access quality education,” said Chigwenembe.

He assured people that the council will monitor and supervise the project to ensure its quality and adherence to deadline.

Chiradzulu District Council chief education officer Gertrude Maliko echoed Chigwenembe’s sentiments that the project was well-placed, considering the challenges girls were facing to access education.

The council is constructing the hostel with funding from the World Bank-funded Governance to Enable Service Delivery Project.
