Speaking during the training, officer-in-charge for Karonga Police Station Edward Chingaipe said many bicycle operators in the district have little knowledge of how to use roads properly, as a result they cycle carelessly and cause a lot of accidents.

Said Chingaipe: ‘‘Karonga District has many bicycle taxi operators, a lot of them operate recklessly without considering the safety of other road users, resulting in a lot of road accidents.

‘‘So, as police, we felt that equipping them with road safety skills would help prevent and reduce road accidents.’’

Chingaipe asked the bicycle taxi operators to follow road signs and avoid over-loading and over-speeding.

In his remarks, chairperson of the bicycle operators in the district Talangapo Mwenuka applauded the stable relationship between operators and police.

Karonga District faces intermittent bicycle road accidents, some of them fatal.
