Northern Region TNM Super League rookies Karonga United’s poor showing continued over the weekend.

This time, they failed to utilise home-ground advantage when they were thumped 0-4 by revitalised Azam Tigers at Mzuzu Stadium in the ongoing second round of the league.

Tigers outplayed Karonga United and made their intent clear after scoring their first goal in the 24th minute through Clifford Kankhuni.

Bright Munthali, who also scored on Saturday against Moyale, hit the second goal three minutes later and Kau-Kau led 2-0 at interval.

Karonga looked a better side in the second-half but they were let down by strikers Pacharo Ngwira and Khumbo Msowoya, who on several occasions shot wide with only goalkeeper Thomas Kalavina at their mercy.

Isaac Kaliati, playmaker for Franco Ndawa’s men, struck the third goal through a thunderous free kick outside the 18-yard box, leaving Karonga ‘keeper, Happy Msowoya helpless in the 58th minute.

In the closing minutes of the game, Kaliati claimed a brace and the fourth for Tigers.

Ndawa said he was delighted to return to Blantyre with four points and praised his charges for the win.

“I can now afford a smile having collected a total of four points. The players have done a good job and they deserve a big hand,” said Ndawa, whose side held Moyale to a 1-all draw on Saturday.

Karonga team manager Abraham Mwakhwawa blamed his players for not making use of several chances they created. He also partly attributes the team’s unsatisfactory performance to lack of commitment by some of his players as reports indicate that they do not train.

Karonga anchor the league with 10 points from 18 games, they are yet to register a win in the second round while Tigers are now seventh with 23 points from 17 games.
