M’mbelwa District Council last Wednesday awarded Kabwafu Health Centre the 2015 Male Championship Trophy signifying its success in that field.

This followed an evaluation exercise the council conducted in all health facilities within Mzimba North district health office (DHO). The findings demonstrated an improvement by the centre on three reproductive health indicators the centres were assessed on.

Kabwafu scored 69 percent on couple counselling, pushed hospital deliveries from 24 percent to 47 percent and women returning for postnatal check-up rose from 10 percent to 52 percent.

Mzimba North DHO Khumbo Shumba said, however, the centre performed below expectation on attendance to the health centre in the first semester of pregnancy, scoring five percent.

“This is an area that requires intensive health education and community engagement,” said Shumba during a highly patronised function at which the award was presented.

Senior Chief Mpherembe, under whose jurisdiction the health centre falls, urged his subjects to support male championship, saying that was the only way to improve indicators.

During the event, Kabwafu Farmers Trust handed over a 20-capacity waiting hut to the centre as a way of ensuring that women who travel long distances deliver at the health facility. n
