Kabwafu players cause a stir over accommodation

Kabwafu FC players on Tuesday caused a stir as they refused to share rooms with Karonga United FC players at Viyere Resthouse in Mzuzu.

The players, who were called for the Flames talent identification exercise at Mzuzu University ground, were residing at the resthouse.

After Tuesday’s  training session some Kabwafu players reportedly refused to share rooms with Karonga players, leading to scuffles between players and officials.

Northern Region Under-23 assistant coach, Wakisa Mwambetania, said the development was unfortunate.

He said the two clubs had a game on Wednesday—a replay of their first round encounter which ended prematurely—and that was why Kabwafu players did not want to share rooms with their opponents.

Kabwafu captain Watson Zimba claimed that Karonga United FC were good at juju; hence, the attempt to avoid mixing with them, but Karonga United assistant coach Kondwani Mwalweni branded Kabwafu as cowards. He said Karonga United are a smart club.

Mwambetania said they will not punish Kabwafu for their conduct.

Flames coach Young Chimodzi, his assistant Jack Chamangwana and technical director John Kaputa were in the North to identify players for national teams.

The three tacticians invited Simama Premier League clubs to the exercise.

Meanwhile, Mzuzu University (Mzuni) have displaced Kabwafu FC at the top of the K3 million Simama Premier League after beating Ekwendeni Hammers 2-1.

Mzuni scored through Innocent Mayuni. The students have now collected 76 points from 32 games played.

Kabwafu, who lost to Karonga United 1-0 on Wednesday, lie second with 74 points. Karonga are third with 73 points from 32 games while Ekwendeni Hammers are fourth (65 points). Nkhata Bay Police lie fifth with 63 points from 34 games.

Reacting to their displacement, Kabwafu FC team manager Starvens Zgambo accused referee Aziz Nyirenda for aiding Karonga United.
