Kaliati wins Sadc Gender Protocol Award

Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Patricia Kaliati has won an award of excellence for her involvement in the acceleration of gender protocols in the Southern Africa Development Community (Sadc) region.

Kaliati emerged the winner for her political will, especially in giving civil society organisations (CSOs) a platform to accelerate the Sadc Gender Protocol.

Her principal secretary, Mary Shawa, was also awarded for her technical assistance in both international and local support to the mainstreaming of gender protocols

During the awards gala at Sunbird Lilongwe on Monday evening, Chitipa District Council took the overall winner award in the Sadc region for being the best district in terms of implementing gender policies and fighting women’s rights.

Presenting the awards, chairperson for Non-governmental organisations (NGO) Gender Coordinating Network, Emma Kaliya, said it was encouraging that Malawi scooped more awards than any other country in the region

Kaliati also congratulated the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at The Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi (Unima), on winning the Sadc Gender in Media Education (Gime) Award this year. n
