Kamanya suicide investigation stalls

Investigations into the suicide case of former deputy minister of Local Government and Rural Development, the late Godfrey Kamanya, have stalled because of insufficient evidence on the matter, police have said.

In an interview with The Nation on Wednesday, Inspector General (IG) of Police Lot Dzonzi said despite Kamanya leaving a suicide note, police have inadequate information because of the nature of his death.

“You see, when the police are carrying out investigations, the operation is easy when the people being questioned are able to take part in the whole process or forensic evidence has to be established.

“But in the absence of all this, it becomes difficult and this has been the case with this particular case,” Dzonzi said.

He, however, said investigations have not been stopped.

“We are still continuing [with investigations], but there is nothing we can do to speed up the process given the nature of his death,” he said.

The contents of Kamanya’s suicide note indicated, among others, how his property would be shared and a special request to former president Joyce Banda to look after his daughter.

He allegedly shot himself in May at his home in Lilongwe’s Area 10 at around 3am.

The late Kamanya, who was MP for Lilongwe Msozi North Constituency, was 41 and is survived by a wife and a daughter, Thoko.
