Kamuzu Stadium demolition song fades

Previous sports minister Enoch Chihana’s announcement that government had plans to demolish the condemned Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre is increasingly fading.
In his State of the Nation Address made in the August House on Tuesday this week, President Peter Mutharika did not mention about such demolition plans.
“Government will complete the construction of Bingu Stadium in Lilongwe and youth centres in Mzuzu and Thyolo. Government will also rehabilitate Kamuzu Institute for Youth in Lilongwe and Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre,” said Mutharika.

Current Sports Minister Grace Chiumia also fell short of assuring about the demolition of the facility whose many terraces in the condemned stands remain cordoned off, thereby significantly reducing the capacity of the country’s main national public events venue.
Chiumia yesterday said as the President assured, the giant stadium would for now, only be renovated while waiting for consultations.
“Most are saying we should not demolish, but just build another stadium in Blantyre, so we want to consult widely. This process takes time. As for the renovations, they should start soon before the stadium hosts July 6 Independence Celebrations,” she explained.
Fifa inspector Nicholas Musonye condemned the stadium in 2011 after inspecting it.
