Kanyenda: It was a very tough game

Battle-hardened forward Esau Kanyenda on Saturday captained his rookie side Polokwane City to a massive 1-0 win over giants Orlando Pirates in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Former Flames coach Kinnah Phiri’s Free State Stars also registered a 2-1 win over fellow strugglers Golden Arrows, but remained second from the bottom despite the win.

Speaking from Polokwane on Sunday, Kanyenda described the win as vital in their quest to be in the comfort zone.

“It was a very tough match, but we held on to our nerves and, deservedly, we emerged out of it triumphant.

“It is not easy to beat a big team like Pirates who boast an all-star side and the win gave us a lot of confidence,” said Kanyenda who was taken off stage with only a minute to full time.

Sipho Jembula struck the priceless goal for Polokwane in the 30th minute that saw them bag three valuable points. Polokwane are 11th on the 16-team log table with 19 points from 18 games.

Kinnah’s Ella Koto have 16 points from 18 matches, three points ahead of bottom-placed Arrows.
