Kanyenda celebrates scoring

Like old vintage wine, battle-hardened forward Esau Kanyenda continues to get better with age.

The veteran forward scored his third successive league goal at the weekend to help his team Polokwane City hold SuperSport United to a 1-1 draw with a classic header. This was Kanyenda’s fourth league goal and he could not hide his excitement in an interview from South Africa yesterday.

“I am very excited with my recent consistency in scoring, it is giving me a lot of inspiration, but I thought I could have scored another goal had I been more sharp,” said Kanyenda.

Midfielder Robert Ng’ambi was also on target as Platinum Stars ended 2013 fifth in the Absa Premiership table after a deserved 2-0 victory over Ajax Cape Town at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday night.  Stars have 22 points from 12 games.

Polokwane are still on 11th position with 15 points from 15 games and Kanyenda believes they can survive relegation in the top-flight league.

However, Gabadinho Mhango could not rise to the occasion as Bloemfontein Celtic were swept aside 3-1 by Bidvest Wits. He was taken off stage in the 32 minute.

But Wits’ Robin Ngalande and Celtic’s Limbikani ‘Pupa’ Mzava were not on show as they are nursing injuries. Wits are third with 25 points from 13 games whereas Celtic are 10th with 16 points from 14 games.

Atusaye Nyondo’s University of Pretoria are 12th with 14 points from 14 games.
