Veteran striker Esau Kanyenda triumphed in a South Africa Premiership battle involving Malawians, scoring when Polokwane City thumped compatriot Atusaye Nyondo’s University of Pretoria 3-0 on Sunday.

“Four minutes later it was 2-0, with Kanyenda beating goalkeeper Washington Arubi to a hopeful long ball out of defence and placing a looping header into the back of the net. Tuks were stunned by City’s fast start, but gradually worked their way back into the game and should have reduced the deficit through Atusaye Nyondo 10 minutes before the break, but the striker wasted two good opportunities,” reported www.supersport.com

City, who also scored through Puleng Tlolane and Galabge Monyana, are 10th on 11 points.

Sill in South Africa, striker Robin Ngalande once again missed BidVest Wits University’s goalless draw with Mpumalanga Black Aces on Saturday. Wits are fifth on 16 points.

Another Malawian international Peter Wadabwa came in the last five minutes as Golden Arrows beat Maritzburg United 2-1 on Sunday. Arrows are 14th at 10 points on the 16-member table.

On Saturday night, Robert Ng’ambi was substituted for the first time this season but that did not prevent his Platinum Stars from defeating Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at the FNB Stadium and qualify for the Telkom Knockout final.

“Ng’ambi had a quiet afternoon. He did not dominate the midfield as he usually does,” SuperSport television channel Four pundit Zein Moosa said after the match which The Nation monitored.
