Karonga Council launches K131m Gesd projects

Karonga district commissioner Paul Kalilombe has said there is need for transparency and accountability when the council is implementing projects under Governance to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd).

He said this during the launch of the K131 million World Bank-funded Gesd projects the district council has lined up this year.

Kalilombe said some projects were previously not properly managed due to lack of coordination between project management committees and the district council.

“We believe the project management committees that will be established in the project sites will work with officials from the district council to have quality infrastructure,” he said.

Kalilombe then urged district council stakeholders and officials to intensify monitoring to ensure quality projects.

Wasambo Area Development Committee (ADC) chairperson Happy Ndovie, whose area will have a staff house and a water pump at Hara Health Centre, said they will supervise the projects to ensure quality and adherence to deadline.

He said: “We are pleased that the projects are being implemented in our area. The health facility does not offer antenatal services because of shortage of houses for health workers.

“So, the house will accommodate a health worker who will assist pregnant women to deliver at the facility.”

Other projects include the construction of a classroom block and toilets at Chisalankhanga Primary School, completion of Karonga Guest House, construction of an office block and toilets at Nyungwe ADC, construction of a classroom block and toilets at Mukole Junior Primary School.

National Local Government Finance Committee is facilitating Gesd in the coutry’s district councils.
