Karonga District Hospital justifies ambulance sale
Karonga District Hospital (KDH) has justified the sale of an ambulance which some quarters say was not supposed to be sold.
The hospital’s administrators argue the ambulance, registration 031 MG 1180, was expensive to run and that normal boarding off procedures were followed.
But a senior KDH official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was an outcry within the hospital following the disposal of the ambulance.
When asked to comment on the matter, the hospital administrator Alick Chirombo said that the ambulance was indeed sold following all procedures.
Said Chirombo: ‘‘We agreed that old ambulances including 031 MG 1180 should be boarded off, and the then DHO Michael Kayange signed the minutes.’’
The vehicle is, however, missing from the list the hospital compiled for vehicles to be boarded off.
KDH which serves a population of 1 500 people per day, runs four rural hospitals, but has two ambulances only.
