The board of struggling TNM Super League rookies Karonga United has made massive structural changes, including hiring Abbas Makawa as head coach.

Makawa, who will be tasked with ensuring survival in the top flight league, replaces Kondwani Mwalweni.

The former Epac mentor was until recently, deputy coach at Kamuzu Barracks .

Makawa could not be reached for comment on Wednesday, but he will be assisted by Geoffrey Katepa as they go into the last phase of the league.

Karonga board of trustees member Willy Yabwanya Phiri, who is based in Canada, and general secretary Gospel Selemani confirmed that the changes were also made to the executive committee, which Pezani Simama still heads.

“I guess you will understand that if things are not going the way you planned, changes must be made. That is why we dissolved the whole executive committee and the technical panel. We believe with his [Makawa] experience and the talent we have in Karonga, the second-round will be a different ball game all together,” Phiri explained in a response to a questionnaire.

“The body of trustees has set up two main agendas. First, is to keep Karonga United in the Super League, no matter what happens. Secondly, Karonga needs a stadium. If our goal of keeping Karonga United in the Super League is realised, we will pull all our resources together into building a stadium,” explained Phiri.

No team promoted from the Northern Region Premier Division has survived beyond a season in the Super League, but Phiri said they were determined to stay and unearth other great players such as Kinnah Phiri and Ernest Mtawali.
