Youths in Karonga District have asked the National Youth Council of Malawi to include them in activities under agriculture, tourism and mining (ATM) initiatives.

Representatives of the youth were speaking on Monday when the council courted the district’s stakeholders to seek their input on the yet-to-be formulated five-year strategic plan.

Mbande Youth Network chairperson Walusungu Kaseghe said the youth are in majority; hence, the need to incorporate them in projects.

Kaseghe: Do not leave the youth out

He said: “Recently, President Lazarus Chakwera launched ATM, which seeks to boost the country’s economy.

“However, this cannot be realised if the youth are left out of the equation.”

The council’s programmes of f i cer Asharn Kossam said the youth development plan needed thorough consultations; hence, the meetings with key players such as the youth, government agencies and non-governmental organisations.

He said: “We have to own the strategic plan as it will support the realisation of the Malawi 2063, which talks about creating wealth for everyone.

“This means the youth who comprise a big part of the country’s population, should be main players in terms of implementing and championing the 2063 development blueprint.”

Karonga district youth officer representative Anna Chima commended the council for the meeting, saying it gave the youth an opportunity to ask for inclusion from money-lending institutions, grant providers and other social services.

Anna Mweninguwe, a youth from Karonga Boma, commended the council for engaging the district’s youths on the strategic plan.

Mweninguwe said she would like to see the plan empowering the youth in various ways to contribute meaningfully towards the country’s development
