Katoto win Kumudzi Volleyball Tourney

Katoto Trickers on Sunday emerged as inaugural champions of the K500 000 (about $750) Kumudzi Ladies Volleyball Tournament after beating Blue Eagles 3-0 in the finals at Kumudzi Centre in Lilongwe.

The Northern Region Volleyball League (NRVL) side, which participated in the contest as guests won the three sets 25-20, 25-19 and 25-21.

To reach the finals, Trickers stunned fellow guest team Blantyre Gems 3-1 in the semi-finals while Blue Eagles beat Snipers Ladies by three straight sets.

Trickers went away with a trophy and K175 000 (about $260)  whereas  runners-up Eagles received K100 000 (about $150). Both teams also received medals.

Trickers coach Jailos Nkhoma, whose team will travel to Namibia for a friendly game in November, said he was happy that his charges played according to instructions.

Dejected Eagles’ captain Lillian Msonthi said complacency cost them the game.

In third place battle, Snipers beat Blantyre Gems 3-1 to receive K60 000 (about $90).

Kumudzi Centre chief executive officer David Mkwambisi thanked the participating teams for maintaining discipline throughout the two-day event.

“I decided to sponsor this tourney in order to help the ladies, who had no sponsorship. It is my aim to take the game of volleyball to great heights and promote it in the rural areas,” Mkwambisi said.

According to Central Region Volleyball League (CRVL) chairperson Robert White, eight teams participated in the first ever ladies tournament. n
