Kawalazi Tea Estate in Nkhata Bay has embarked on a K10million rehabilitation of the Kawalazi-Mzenga Road.

According to the deputy general manager Kenneth Kabaghe, the 30km road is impassable during the rainy season.

Kabaghe said the estate uses the road to transport its tea and macadamia nuts while villagers use it to connect to Mzuzu-Nkhata Bay Road.

“We have been waiting for government to work on it, to no avail; the road has not been maintained for the past three years,” Kabaghe said.

In an interview Traditional Authority(T/A) Kabunduli said the road means a lot to his subjects as they use it when referred to Nkhata Bay District Hospital from Mzenga or Chitheka health centres.

Kabunduli, in whose locality the estate lies added that though government is least concerned about the road, tea exports from the estate pass through the road enroute to Kenya.
