Kayira severely beats Chimbalanga in Mzuzu

Lilongwe-based professional boxer Alex Chimbalanga, 27, suffered a shock defeat on Sunday.

He was severely beaten by 20-year-old semi-professional Mzuzu-based boxing star Laston Kayira.

Right from the start Chimbalanga performed below par.

Kayira was throwing hard punches that Chimbalanga failed to block. After three rounds, Chimbalanga threw in the towel.

Judges gave all the three-rounds  to Kayira, scoring 9-8, 9-10 and 9-8.

However, Chimbalanga attributed his poor show to under-weight. He said his opponent weighed 60 kilogrammes while he weighed 55 kilogrammes.

Kayira’s coach Gabriel Kondowe downplayed such claims, wondering why Chimbalanga agreed to fight when his weight was below that of Kayira.
