KB, Blue Eagles shine in Raiply volleyball

Kamuzu Barracks (KB) and Blue Eagles on Sunday emerged champions of K3.5 million ($5,958.46) Raiply National Volleyball Championship at Katoto Secondary School in Mzuzu.

KB and Eagles won the men’s and women’s categories after beating Moyale Barracks and Mzuzu International Academy respectively by 3-0 margins.

For their feat, KB were rewarded with a trophy and K1 million cash prize while Eagles received a cup and K100 000 ($170.24).

Runners-up in the men’s category went away with K300 000 ($510.72) consolation whereas in the women ‘sevent got K70 000 ($119.16).

According to Volleyball Association of Malawi (VAM) vice-president James Kaunda, by virtue of winning the national championship in the men’s category, KB have earned automatic qualification for the Zone VI Games to be held in Swaziland later this year.

A total of 16 teams (10 men’s and six women’s teams) qualified for the national phase of the tournament.

Raiply Malawi chief executive officer Thomas Oommen pledged continued sponsorship of the event.

“We are impressed with the way the tournament has been run and we promise to come back bigger and better next year,” he said.

Regional sports officer Georgina Msowoya, who was the guest of honour at the event, urged KB not to relax but intensify preparations for Zone VI Games. n
