Keep enough maize for consumption, farmers told
Farmers have been urged to keep enough maize upon harvesting to avoid food insecurity situations.
Speaking on Tuesday during a field day organised by Salima Agricultural Development Division, Ministry of Agriculture director of animal health and livestock development Julius Chulu said farmers should avoid the temptation to sell a larger portion of their harvests.
He said: “Please, vendors should not woo you into selling all your harvest. Let us keep maize for our consumption. Sell only the surplus.”
During the field day, guests were also taken on a field visit to appreciate crops and agricultural activities taking place in the district and one issue that came out was lack of established markets for produce such as soya beans, cotton and milk.
Four diversified sites were visited, milk production site, a soya field and two fields of different varieties of maize.
Salima District Council chairperson Chifungo Katoweka assured farmers that government is working to resolve market challenges.
This year’s theme was ‘Enterprise diversification for better livelihoods’.
It was organised with financial support from Bayer and Food and Agriculture Organisation through the Afikepo Programme.
