Kwathu Drama Group actor Evance Mbewe, also known as Che Jali in the theatre circles, has appealed for support to help deal with his diabetic condition.

The health condition, which has been compounded by high blood pressure, has affected his sight as he suffered a partial stroke and he now uses walking aids.

Mbewe has been bedridden for a year now and due to his condition, he has been forced to relocate from Blantyre to his home district in Molele, Thyolo.

According to one of his brothers Samuel Mbewe, the actor needs financial support to help him receive medical care since acting was his only source of money.

“A year is a long time. It has been a while now since his friends from Kwathu offered him any support. His condition is curable. If only he can get the specialised medical assistance, I am sure he can recover,” he said.

Kwathu Drama Group co-director Charles Mphoka said they are aware of Mbewe’s predicament and that plans are already underway to go and visit him in Thyolo.

“It has been a tough time for us as Kwathu family. Mbewe was taken ill around the same time that another member of the group Eric Mabedi fell sick. We made efforts then to have him receive medical attention, but it was not possible since we had stopped performing,” said Mphoka.

He said they will send one of their members to visit him to assess his situation as at now so that they can facilitate to have him receive medical attention.

Mabedi, speaking as National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam) president, said when an artist is faced with a situation like Mbewe’s, primarily it is the duty of his employers, in this case Kwathu, to come in and help.

“I hope the leadership of Kwathu will make the right interventions to help one of their sons,” he said.

Last year, Mabedi was flown to India by the Malawi government through the Ministry of Health (MoH) where he had a kidney transplant surgery after he also sounded an SOS. He came back early last-month and he is expected to make his return on stage on Martyrs Day.
