Lack of civic education hampers development—Nice

Kalindekafe: Citizens should be empowered

The National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust says one of the contributing factors for underdevelopment in the country is the absence of civic education.

Nice national programmes manager Gray Kalindekafe made the observation last week in an interview following the European Union’s grant of K1.89 billion to the Trust for implementing Programme Estimate Number 2 which focuses much on community empowerment.

Kalindekafe noted that citizens fail to participate in various development projects because they do not know that the projects belong to them.

He said development takes place when citizens are sensitised to their roles and responsibilities.

“Civic education is a catalyst of development. When citizens are empowered they are able to participate effectively in community development projects and they are also able to monitor the implementation of the projects,” said Kalindekafe.

He, therefore, suggested change of approach to civic education, saying it is high time they shifted from only providing awareness to empowering the public “so that Malawians should begin to think outside the box”.
