The Lake of Stars (LoS) Festival has partnered with this year’s Mulanje Mountain Porters Race.

The race, which takes place on July 11 and marks its 19th anniversary, is set to be a huge event which not only features the traditional runners trekking from Likhubula Valley through Chambe and Lichenya Plateau and back to Likhubula, but also an exciting concert from LoS, dubbed the LoS Island in the Sky Concert at the finish line of the race. The gig presents an opportunity for people to sample the kind of music to be treated to at this year’s festival. Tay_grin_performing_lake_of_stars

“We are excited to be part of such an amazing event, not only as partner of the race, but also as runners from Team LoS. We have rallied up some of our musicians and members of the LoS team to join the race so we get the full experience,” beamed LoS’ Will Jameson.

“The concert, which we are hosting in partnership with Nde’feyo and Mibawa, will feature live performances from local LoS headliners Bucci, Jacaranda School Choir and a special guest from South Africa. While the race starts at 6am, the concert will run from 1pm to 5pm,” said Jameson.

Established in 1996, the Porters Race was limited to porters and guides of Mount Mulanje, but soon became a hive of athletics by attracting other participants such as local and national athletes.

Over the years it has become a big event that attracts hundreds of participants. In 2014 alone, 400 runners—both male and female—took part in the race, and it attracted over 4 000 spectators.

Among the participants were both athletes from South Africa, England, Switzerland, America, Mozambique and some parts of Europe.

With the combination of sport, music and culture, the 2015 Mount Mulanje porters’ will be nothing short of memorable.

This years’ LoS is set to take place at Sunbird’s Nkopola Lodge on the shores of Lake Malawi from September 25 to 27 2015.
