Residents of Chipasula Village, Traditional Authority M’bangombe in Lilongwe were in jovial mood last Friday when a non-governmental organisation Landirani Trust handed over a newly built block at Songwe Primary School.

Since its establishment in 2012, pupils at the school have had challenges during rainy season.

The old church which they used as classrooms is in a dilapidated state.

This resulted in massive absenteeism among the 419 pupils of whom 214 are girls.

The school’s headteacher Blessings Chimonjo said besides lack of classrooms, the schools also faces shortage of teachers.

“We have 419 pupils now but even with an additional school block, we don’t have enough staff. Therefore, I am appealing to government to address this issue as soon as possible,” he said.

Landirani Trust country manager Duncan Chiyani said the organisation identified the need for a school block and sourced funding from their partners Love Support Unite and NIPPSA 733.n
