Late Bingu’s doctor faces negligence charges

The Medical Council of Malawi (MCM) has summoned Dr Dan Namarika, who was personal physician for the late president Bingu wa Mutharika, to appear before its disciplinary committee to answer charges of negligence on how he handled the deceased after his collapse at the New State House in Lilongwe last April.

In an interview on Tuesday, MCM registrar Abel Kawonga said the council has finalised its investigations on Namarika and is awaiting government funding for the disciplinary committee to sit.

Said Kawonga: “We have done our investigations and what is remaining now is for the disciplinary committee to meet. Dr Namarika is aware that he is supposed to appear before the committee. He will be called for the committee to hear his side of the story.”

The report of the Commission of Inquiry into the death of Mutharika released last week says that Namarika had left his emergency medical kit at his house within the New State House compound at the time he was called to attend to Mutharika after the president had collapsed.

The commission also heard that Namarika had problems attending to Mutharika at the State House and in transit to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) because he had an injury on his arm.

He said the council will make its final determination on the matter after the disciplinary hearing.

Kawonga said the council first summoned Namarika immediately after Mutharika’s death and asked him to submit an incident report which the registrar said the doctor has not done.

Namarika could not be reached on his phone on Tuesday.
