The Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (LTAM) says it is set to hold its elective annual general meeting (AGM) this Saturday where around 50 delegates are expected to attend.

LTAM acting general secretary Christopher Kachale told reporters over the weekend that the meeting will take place in Blantyre. It follows the expiry of the tenure for current executive committee led by Titani Muwalo.

“The two years we were supposed to be in office have expired, so it’s time to have a new committee which we hope will take lawn tennis forward,” he said.

Kachale, who also doubles as treasurer, said the AGM will also amend the association’s constitution.

“A lot of things have changed over the years, so we need to update some of the laws governing LTAM,” Kachale said.

There was confusion as to where the AGM should be held after Muwalo announced it will be conducted in Lilongwe.

“The Malawi National Council of Sports has approved it to be conducted at its offices in Blantyre so that is where we will all assemble,” the acting GS said.

Kachale has meanwhile expressed interest to vie for the presidency.

“I feel I can develop the sport better if I am at the helm of the association,” he said. “Right now, I am in negotiations with a Zimbabwe-based institution to be helping our tennis players get sports scholarships abroad.”

Kachale might face the incumbent Muwalo, whose candidacy has been embroiled in controversy after he did not pay the K1 000 ($2) membership fee.

LTAM electoral rules demand that aspirants must be paid-up members. However, Muwalo is adamant that he qualifies to stand.

“I do not know why the issue of being a paid-up member before you contest is surfacing now. However, in as far as I am concerned, I am eligible to contest,” he said.
