Let UDF members nominate me for 2014—Atupele

Minister of Economic Development and Planning Atupele Muluzi says his likelihood of contesting in the 2014 general elections will depend on his nomination by UDF party members.

In an interview on Thursday, Muluzi, who is also parliamentarian for Machinga North East Constituency, said he cannot impose himself as a United Democratic Front (UDF) presidential candidate.

Asked on whether he would contest the presidency at the forthcoming convention, Muluzi also said it was up to the party members to give him the mandate to do so.

“My standing is dependent on people. On my own, I cannot and so, if delegates want me to contest at the convention, that will be something else,” he said.

Muluzi recently rebuffed calls from some UDF sympathisers to resign from the Joyce Banda government together with Ibrahim Matola, who is Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change Management.

On Sunday, he also told Zodiak Broadcasting Station that he has not abandoned his ambition to contest 2014 presidential elections if elected at a UDF convention.

Chancellor College political scientist Dr Mustafa Hussein said in a separate interview in the absence of a memorandum of understanding between UDF and People’s Party [PP], Muluzi’s point should be taken seriously.
