The Flames had the honour of meeting Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf at her official residence in Monrovia on Wednesday.

That was not all. The Flames got a morale boost ahead of their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final qualification round match against Ghana on Saturday as the Liberian leader gave them $3 100 [about K833 000], which the Flames delegation shared.

FAM commercial manager Casper Jangale confirmed Flames’ audience with Sirleaf.

“She invited them to State House and gave them $120 each and for a delegation of 30, it translated to $3 100. It was just a presidential gesture,” said Jangale.

Malawi President Joyce Banda has always idolised her Liberia counterpart who is considered one of the most powerful women on the continent.

The Flames travelled to Liberia for a strength-testing match which they lost 1-0 on Tuesday at Samuel Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia.

The match was part of the two teams’ preparations for this coming weekend’s Africa Cup of Nations final qualification round first legs in which the Flames face Ghana while Liberia will host the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
