Lilongwe-Kasiya-Santhe Road to save travellers time

Travellers between Lilongwe and Kasungu will save up to 30 minutes by using the Lilongwe Old Airport-Santhe via Kasiya  Road currently under construction.

Roads Authority (RA) chief executive officer Engineer Emmanuel Matapa said on Wednesday that despite the road being 20 kilometres longer than the Lilongwe-Kasungu via Mponela Road, its design and quality will make travelling easier and faster.

Mhango and RA spokesperson Portia Kajanga inspect a section of the road

He was speaking during Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango’s inspection tour to appreciate the road’s  progress and push for speedy completion for people to start benefiting.

“The road is 6.8 metres wide with 1.5-metre shoulders on either side. The thickness is big and the road is smooth to serve travellers better than the Lilongwe-Kasungu via Mponela which has eaten up shoulders and has pot-holes,” said Matapa.

In his remarks, Mhango said he is impressed with the progress and was upbeat that the road will be commissioned mid-April.

“As we have always said, this road is economically important. So, government is doing everything possible to complete and open it,” he said.

RA director of construction Engineer Sam Kadangwe said the only major works remaining on the 95-kilometre road is the grade separation which involves lifting the road to pass above the Lilongwe-Mchinji Railway line.
