Lilongwe learners undergo environmental training

Malawi Creation Care Network on Saturday held an advocacy environmental training at Lilongwe Teacher Training College targeting students, faith-based organisations and communities from around Lilongwe to raise awareness on environmental hazards.

The network’s representative Malango Kayira, who is also an environmental activist, said the training sought to sensitise young people to the environmental hazards caused by thin plastics and other challenges. 

She said: “In general, the training is on waste management, climate adaptation and mitigation and also the hazards of thin plastic bags. Now that the government has banned thin plastic bags, we want to ensure that we advocate for enforcement.” 

Kayira observed that plastic bags that become litter endanger many facets of the environment, including marine life and the food chain. 

“Now that the ban is in place, it is the responsibility of youths to play an active role to ensure enforcement. We all have a huge role to play in ensuring change in our communities, areas of work and in every aspect of life,” said Kayira.

One of the participants, Takondwa Maluwa, a learner at Bwaila Secondary School, described the training as an enriching experience.

“The training was important as it will help us to take care of the environment and also manage the environment. My key takeaway is that everyone should be vigilant in environmental management,” she said.  

Some of the participants came from the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar), Nalikule College and Bwaila Secondary School.
