Film fans are in for a treat as the inaugural Lilongwe Shorts Film Festival starts tonight at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe.
The short film festival, presented by Lake of Stars and the Film Association of Malawi, will feature films from Malawian filmmakers alongside those from around the globe.
Over 100 submissions of all styles and backgrounds have been received, from countries as diverse as Egypt, Norway, South Korea, France, DRC, Scotland, Burkino Faso and the USA.
Patrick Garety, the festival’s creative director, says: “I’m delighted with the interest that has been shown from all around the world in this new event. And in particular, with the reaction of Malawi’s film community, who have embraced the opportunity to participate in the festival and showcase their work to the public.
“I’m excited to see that there are some really creative filmmakers coming up through the ranks. We have received submissions from more than 20 countries, so there will definitely be an international flavour to the festival.”
As well as viewing over 50 short films, ranging in length from just a few minutes up to half an hour, the audience will have the chance to participate in the awards ceremony that will be taking place, by placing their vote in the ‘Audience Award’ category.
Other award categories include Best Film, Best Malawian Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Documentary.
The packed two-day event programme will also feature live music and poetry from Menes, George Kalukusha, Joshua Matonga, Adrian Kwelepeta and Q Malewezi along with a question-and-answer session with some of the filmmakers.
“And on Saturday morning, younger film fans have the opportunity to get involved with the Lilongwe Tots Children’s Session. A variety of short films specifically aimed at children will be shown, including some well-known names alongside African children’s cartoons and films created by young people. The Tilinanu Children’s Choir will also be performing a few songs,” said Garety.
