Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) says   it will construct independent multipurpose  water plants to reduce interrupted water supply in the city.

Speaking during a press briefing at Madzi House, LWB chief executive officer Alfonso Chikuni said most parts of Lilongwe are facing water problems because the water body is unable to pump enough water.

He said it was for this reason that LWB is constructing a multipurpose plant worth K116 billion on Diamphwi Dam, increasing Kamuzu Dam capacity at a cost of K14 million and constructing an independent plant in Lumbadzi.

Chikuni further said the board has been undertaking the Airwing Project where two reservoirs and two pumping stations have been constructed over the past two years.

According to Chikuni, LWB and China Railway Company engineers worked together to complete the K378 million project which was funded by the World Bank.

The project is expected to improve water supply to the surrounding areas of Njewa, Chitedze, Likuni, Natural Resources College and part of Chinsapo, Area 47, Mtandire and part of Area 49.

LWB is expected to have about 250 000 customers by the end of July, 2015.
