Limbe Leaf Tobacco Company Limited at the weekend donated school infrastructure and learning materials worth K49.1 million to three schools in Mzimba and Rumphi districts.

Speaking at the handover ceremony of the structures on Friday, Limbe Leaf legal and corporate affairs director Febbie Chikungwa said the donations were meant to attract learners to go to school in the predominantly tobacco growing districts where issues of child labour are common.
She said: “Research has shown that positive learning environment motivates children to be in school. As a tobacco company we would like to see many children go to school.
“We do not want to see school-going children in tobacco or any fields. Provision of infrastructure where we can, will go a long way in enabling us reach our goals towards child labour eradication.”
Mzimba North desk officer for primary education Veronica Lozi said Majiga had four classrooms which forced other classes to take place under trees. She said the school did not have any house for its four teachers.
“Poor infrastructure and lack of houses affected enrolment of learners. We expect the donation to help increase enrolment,” she said.
Education division manager for the North, Temwa Msiska, said government policies aim at providing quality and relevant education to learners. 
