South African artist Lira will headline Women of Distinction Awards (Woda) which are scheduled to take place in June having been shifted from May 3.

Meanwhile, NPL photojournalist Thoko Chikondi is one of the nominees in the media category alongside MBC Radio One’s Gloria Banda and Mercy Simbi of Story Workshop. “Lira is being brought to Malawi courtesy of our official carrier, Malawian Airlines who have sponsored her flights. They are also flying the Africa Magic crew which will be filming the awards for broadcast on DSTV. Other artists lined up to perform are Aycee James, Favoured Martha and the WODA All Stars and more,” said the awards chairperson Zilanie Nyundo.

“Initially, the event was scheduled for May 3 but has been shifted due to technical problems that hit the nomination process” Said Nyundo at a press conference in Lilongwe on Monday night:

“Due to technical problems in the nomination process with SMS shortcode and with verifying information about the finalists, Woda was unable to begin the voting phase in time. With the upcoming tripartite elections occupying the critical event, we will soon confirm a date for early June.”

So far, the media category has joined the lifetime, national woman, sports, leadership-parliament and arts-acting under the voting categories.

“Based on the public response to nominations for the media category, the jury has recommended that it becomes a voting category. The other categories awardees will be selected by the jury. From May 1, people are being encouraged to send the name of the finalist to 51400,” explained Nyundo.
