Livingstonia Synod Aids Programme (Lisap) has donated 300 bags of maize to 150 villagers at Hora and Eswazini in Mzimba.

The K4.6 million intervention, funded by GZB Netherlands, comes in response to hailstorms which destroyed crops, livestock and homes in the area early this year.

The recipients largely comprised the elderly, orphans and people living with HIV and Aids

Lisap programmes officer Joshua Hara said it is a pity the victims were omitted in the national response run by World Food Programme.

“We targeted this area because the people still needed assistance. We hope that the two bags given to each beneficiary will keep them going for weeks,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Lucia Chinula, thanked the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia social arm, saying her household has been hit hard by hunger and poverty.

The 70-year-old, who survives on doing piece works to find food, said her maize field did not produce enough yield following the disaster.

Crops officer Graciano Galeta said Hora and Eswazini extension planning areas were among the worst hit by the disasters caused by heavy rains.
