The Malawi High Commission in the United Kingdom, through the Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC), has invited the business community in Malawi to participate in the third Africa-Ireland Economic Forum.

The event is scheduled to take place in Dublin from October 2 to 4 2013.

The forum, under the theme Building Partnerships, is aimed at providing an opportunity for Irish businesspeople to connect with African partners and explore opportunities for increased trade and investment, according to MITC public relations manager Deliby Nyale.

“The key areas of focus during the forum include agriculture and agri-business; telecommunications, financial services and Diaspora engagement,” Nyale told Business News on Thursday.

Producers and exporters in the country have often cited lack of ready markets for their goods as one of the challenges they face.

As such, economic commentators have argued that Malawi’s participation at international business forums could help private sector players explore new markets for their goods and strike business deals and partnerships in the process.

“It is, therefore, in the light of the importance of the event that MITC is inviting interested trade and investment officials, government and private sector, who have an interest to pursue business linkages with Ireland to attend the event,” said Nyale.

She said Ireland provides a substantial potential for companies and businesses in Malawi to explore new markets or expand their sales in Europe.

Nyale said the forum will also help Malawi establish linkages with Irish companies to penetrate the EU marketplace.

She said by working with Irish businesses, Malawian businesses can gain access to total solution to the European requirements in various sectors like agriculture and agribusiness, telecommunications and manufacturing.

“The event will obviously create constructive linkages between the Irish and Malawian private sectors on how best they can promote trade and exploit market opportunities between the two countries,” added Nyale.
