Lowe replaces Chakwera as leader of opposition

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has elected Lilongwe Central member of Parliament (MP) Lobin Lowe as an interim leader of opposition replacing the party president Lazarus Chakwera who resigned from his position in order to contest as the party’s torchbearer in the upcoming May 21 elections.

Parliamentary Standing Orders indicate that the opposition party with the highest number of MPs contributes a leader of opposition.

The opposition in Parliament have since warmly welcomed Lowe’s election describing him as a levelheaded and soberminded leader who has the respect of the whole House; government and opposition.

About 23 members of Parliament including Chakwera himself voted on Tuesday to elect Lowe who received 11 votes against MP for Mzimba Solora Jacob Hara who received 9 votes.

MP for Dedza East Juliana Lunguzi threw her card into the game but only managed to garner three votes.

However, Lowe will not receive any terminal benefits accrued to the Leader of Opposition because he will be in office for less than 21 days, Clerk of Parliament Fiona Kalemba told Nation Online a few weeks ago.
