Luso TV has invested K1.8 million (about $4 500) in the Clash of Giants Soccer Bonanza to involve Big Bullets, Mighty Wanderers, Silver Strikers and Epac FC.

The two-day bonanza, which will be played next weekend at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe, has been organised by a joint committee of Central Region supporters of the four clubs.

The K1.8 million will cater for prizes of the winning team and individuals.

In an interview at the weekend, Luso TV station manager Franklin Phanga said they decided to sponsor the bonanza because it is in line with the station’s vision of developing talent

“When we were approached by the committee, management did hesitate. What impressed management was the spirit of self-help demonstrated by the clubs,” said Phanga who was accompanied by his managing director, celebrated musician Kendall Kamwendo.

Phanga said the winning team will receive K1 million (about $2 500) while the top goal scorer, player of the tournament, best midfielder and best goalkeeper will receive K20 000 (about $50) each. The balance will go towards other logistics such as dressing the referees, the ball boys and buying trophies and medals for the winners and runners-up.

Chairperson of the bonanza’s organising committee, Austin Kasito, has expressed gratitude to Luso for assisting the fundraising venture.

“This is great news to us. We are indebted to Luso for partnering us in our initiative to raise funds for the four clubs. This is a rare gesture,” said Kasito.

The Football association of Malawi (FAM), too, has hailed Luso for the support..

“Your objectives are complementary to what FAM is set to achieve. What you have done today promises good things to come from your TV station,” said FAM competitions subcommittee chairperson James Mwenda.

Luso TV Station is expected to roll out this month.
