Mafco, LDNL tussle over players’ eligibility

Malawi Armed forces College (Mafco) netball club risk punishment after illegally featuring two players in Lilongwe and District Netball League (LDNL) games.

Shooter Chimwemwe Madeya and centre Sylvia Chiphwanya joined Mafco from Zomba-based side Airwing.

However, LDNL claims its investigation established that their former club, Zomba Airwing, did not issue clearances.

LDNL chairperson Charity Malanga said in an interview yesterday that they are planning to punish Mafco by deducting their points and baskets in the ongoing Central Health-sponsored league.

“We launched the investigations after clubs protested that Mafco was using uncleared players. After contacting Airwing officials, we were told that there was no agreement with Mafco that the players should join them,” Malanga said.

The LDNL chairperson further said that Mafco produced clearance letters which were invalid.

“The source of the clearances is not known because Airwing has denied issuing them,” she said.

“The punishment against Mafco will include deduction of 100 baskets and all the points accumulated from games the two players featured.”

However, Mafco general secretary Lyton Nkosi insisted that the players were cleared.

“These players, on their own, came here to try their luck. We didn’t invite them. We asked them if they have clearances [from their clubs] and they produced them. We are surprised that they want to punish us,” he said.

Currently, Mafco are on position three with four points and if the league metes out the punishments, the team will have no point.
